Hibernation season; breaking out the space heaters

There is something romantic and dreaming about this time of year.

As we’re slipping from Summer into fall and quickly into winter, there are many changes taking place in my psyche.

Throughout the summer, my brain is focused on having fun in the sun and keeping everything light-hearted. It’s a time to meet up with friends, grab ice cold drinks on the patio, and spend days basking in the sunshine. As cold weather begins to emerge in our region, my brain immediately shifts towards the indoor work I can accomplish all season long. Because the outdoor air temperature is going to be low and uncomfortable, I start dreaming about improving my indoor environment and the activities I can find to entertain myself during the many long, cold, dark hours. Often, I take up a new hobby such as painting or sewing to bridge the long and boring season. Additionally, I start feeling of the instinctual desire to begin hibernating. I want to nest in my home, and to create a beautifully warm and comfortable environment. This is about the time that I started venturing around to local thrift stores and collecting space heaters. Every year, I travel around the county and try to build up my arsenal of alternative heating options. I have learned from experience that my central heating system is incapable of keeping up my home as warm, toasty, and cozy as I want. When the cold air starts blowing through, I crave intensively warm and snuggly environments. Call it nature or nurture, but every cold season, my instinct is to start hunting and gathering for additional space heaters.
